Zentrifurie, a conceptual interplay of centrifugal force and fury – antiquity meets classical physics… The result is a combination of a millennia-old chimera clad in queer-feminist technological garb.

Mythological reference: the Furies

The Fury is an ambivalent mythological figure. She is often depicted as an old yet young woman, with a gaunt body, sagging breasts and wild hair.

However, she need not be viewed solely in a negative light, for she is a misplaced yet powerful representation. The Fury is chaos.

‘Zentrifurie’ was one of Ursula M. Lücke’s first figures.

The spinning figure depicts a golfer’s gesture. Such dynamic gestures are often reserved for figures with masculine connotations in model-making. One has been given a rounded breast, the other is flat. The flying figure is a swimmer with one flat and one rounded breast.

Both are closely connected; their faces are very close together. At the same time, the golfer is hurling the other figure outwards – centrifugal force. The base was originally planned to be straight, but ended up sloping (> New Materialism, p. 18), which heightens the dynamism. Furies are queer, dynamic beings who hurl uncontrollable and wild forces into the world.
